An insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is a power semiconductor device with three terminals that functions as an electronic switch. It was created to combine fast switching with high efficiency. The IGBT consists of four alternating layers (P–N–P–N) which are controlled by a metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) gate structure. While the structure of the IGBT is similar to a thyristor with a "MOS" gate, the thyristor action is completely suppressed, allowing only transistor action in the entire device operation range. The IGBT is capable of synthesizing complex waveforms with pulse-width modulation and low-pass filters, making it suitable for use in switching amplifiers in sound systems and industrial control systems. In modern switching applications, the devices can operate at pulse repetition rates well into the ultrasonic-range frequencies, significantly higher than the audio frequencies handled by the device in its role as an analog audio amplifier. As of 2010, the IGBT was the second most widely used power transistor, following the power MOSFET.
