A Zener diode is a special kind of diode that is designed to allow current to flow in the opposite direction when a specific reverse voltage, known as the Zener voltage, is reached. Zener diodes come in a wide range of Zener voltages, with some even being variable. Some Zener diodes have a heavily doped p–n junction with a low Zener voltage, allowing for reverse conduction through electron quantum tunnelling in the short distance between the p and n regions. This is known as the Zener effect, named after Clarence Zener. Diodes with higher Zener voltages have lightly doped junctions and operate using avalanche breakdown. Both breakdown types are present in Zener diodes, with the Zener effect being predominant at lower voltages and avalanche breakdown at higher voltages. Zener diodes are often used to create low-power stabilized supply rails from a higher voltage and to provide reference voltages for circuits, especially in stabilized power supplies. They are also utilized to protect circuits from overvoltage, such as electrostatic discharge.
